Hypnosis: Myths vs Facts

A lot of people are confused about what hypnosis and hypnotherapy really are. Some think it means being put into a trance where you’re made to do things you wouldn’t normally do, as you see on television or hypnosis stage shows. So let’s take a look at what hypnosis and hypnotherapy really are.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and no human being can hypnotise another human being. During hypnosis and hypnotherapy, you put yourself into a state of deep relaxation with the help of the hypnotherapist. Some call it a hypnotic trance, but at all times you are aware of what is going on around you. You are also in complete control of yourself and cannot be made to do anything you don’t want to do. What actually happens is, in this deeply relaxed state, you are able to access your subconscious mind. This is where we store our thoughts, dreams, and memories. You can use hypnotic suggestions to change whatever negative thoughts you have stored in your subconscious mind.

Some people think they can’t be hypnotised, or you can only be hypnotised if you have a “weak mind”. This is not true. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are simply deep states of relaxation. How strong your mind is has nothing to do with whether or not you can relax and how deeply. And almost everyone can do self-hypnosis. If you daydream or can lose yourself in any kind of activity, you can be hypnotised, as those are very light relaxation states.

Dispelling myths about hypnosis:

  • You will not be unconscious and you are not asleep.
  • You will not lose control; nobody can take control over you.
  • You will not lose power, as you can get out of hypnosis anytime you choose to.
  • You will not be able to do things that you are unwilling to do under normal circumstances.
  • You will be able to remember what happens, at all times. You will be perfectly aware of what is going on.

During hypnosis you remain in control and you decide how deep your trance will be.

THE BENEFITS OF HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy is used to overcome a specific problem. It seeks to identify the root cause of your problem and fix it. It bypasses the conscious mind, to reveal information stored in your subconscious.  Using hypnotherapy can help:

  • Aid or resolve any type of issue that you experience;
  • Attain a better understanding of yourself, your goals and values;
